Silicone Oil vs. Lip Filler

Aug 27, 2019

What patients in San Diego should know about silicone oil lip injections versus lip fillers

By Dr. Paul E. Chasan, board-certified plastic surgeon in San Diego, California

Silicone oil injections and lip fillers can give you fuller lips, but many patients are concerned about silicone and whether it or lip fillers are safer for lip augmentation.

Dr. Paul E. Chasan uses several types of cosmetic injections to safely enhance his patients’ lips. Whether you use silicone oil or lip fillers depends on your specific needs, the results you want, and how long you want your lip enhancement to last.

In this article, Dr. Paul E. Chasan, a board-certified plastic surgeon in San Diego, explains the the difference between silicone oil lip injections and lip fillers. He will offer his expert opinion on the advantages and safety of both cosmetic procedures.

What Are Silicone Oil Injections And Are They Safe?

Silicone oil is a synthetic material that is used for soft tissue augmentation such as wrinkles, thin lips, and other cosmetic issues on the face. A 2018 article from Very Well Health reports some plastic surgeon experts say, “silicone injections have been successfully used for decades to permanently fill in acne scars, improve facial areas affected by AIDS-induced lipoatrophy, and for non-surgical rhinoplasty.”

Due to the media’s attention around the negative side effects of silicone injections, many people believe silicone oil is unsafe. But silicone oil injections are a low-risk, non-surgical procedure that can add volume and structure to your lips for many years.

Silicone oil has the same risks as any cosmetic injections; permanent damage and injury is caused when a surgeon lacks experience and knowledge. Dr. Paul E. Chasan has administered silicone oil injections for years to treat his patients’ cosmetic concerns including small, thin lips. What Are Lip Fillers?

Juvederm and Restylane are dermal fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body and is absorbed into the body safely over time. A 2018 article published by WebMD states that lip fillers are also used often because they reshape the lips with minimal health risks. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance, patients are unlikely to have an allergic reaction and the volume and the structure of the lip is easily controlled with dermal fillers.

Lip fillers are minimally invasive procedures that are used for a wide range of cosmetic purposes such as reducing lines and wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and cheeks. In addition to these uses, Juvederm and Restylane are used to improve the volume and shape of the lips.

What Is The Difference Between Lip Filler and Silicone Oil Injections?

As we age, we lose elasticity and collagen, causing our lips to become thin, flat, and wrinkled. Many cosmetic solutions are available to make lips plumper and younger looking, but cosmetic injections are among the most popular because they offer many aesthetic benefits with few risks.

Juvederm and Restylane last about 4-6 months and are great for those who are just beginning to enhance their lips. They give you time to choose the fullness and structure of your lips and can be easily reversed should you decide you no longer want lip enhancement.

Silicone oil lip injections are ideal for those who know the shape and structure they want their lips to be and want those results to last long-term. Silicone injections are considered a permanent cosmetic procedure, lasting for many years. Contrary to popular belief, they can be reversed and Dr. Paul E. Chasan has removed silicone oil from many of his patients who change their minds about their lip augmentation results.

At Ranch and Coast Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa we practice only the best cosmetic procedures and techniques, ensuring our patients are safe and receive the highest quality aesthetic outcomes. During a consultation, Dr. Paul E. Chasan would be glad to discuss whether silicone oil injections or dermal fillers are right for you.
